Madason Houser’s small, 4-year-old body has been hooked up to a ventilator for days. She has been on four blood pressure medications and a pacemaker.
But with any luck, the Bessemer City girl’s new heart will pump new life into the child.
Madason went into surgery at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
Surgeons worked on her for eight hours, removing her damaged heart and replacing it with another.
Her parents finally got to see her at 2:30 a.m.
Her blood pressure was low.
They were scared.
Doctors adjusted the child’s medications and continued to monitor her heart.
Her blue-gray eyes opened and she moved around a bit, but she was still heavily sedated. Doctors planned to reduce sedatives and attempt to wake her over the weekend.
Melissa and Antonio Houser were on pins and needles each day. They leaned on family and friends to help care for their other three children while they visited their ailing daughter.
