Fundraiser to benefit new dad, Kansas

Source: The Topeka Capital-Journal | Phil Anderson

For 911 dispatchers at the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center, responding to life-threatening situations is a way of life.

So when the husband of one of their co-workers was diagnosed with a terminal medical condition, they jumped into action.

Melanie Hasselman, whose husband Greg, 24, has a condition that will require a heart and liver transplant, said she still can't believe the way people in Topeka and the surrounding community have responded to news of her husband's situation.

"It's been crazy," Hasselman, 22, said during a break from her dispatch duties Thursday afternoon. "People I've never met and probably will never meet have given us their support."

She said some people saw television news reports of the young couple's challenges and sent donations to an account set up for her husband's medical expenses, while others have offered words of encouragement.

Then there are her co-workers and others who work with the city who have rallied to their support.
