NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On a day that many lost their lives nearly a decade ago, a girl from Houston was given a second chance.
Kareena faced a life-or-death situation as she waited to receive an organ donation on September 11, 2001.
The now 10-year-old was just an infant in need of a liver transplant when the tragedy occurred in New York City.
At the time of the deadly attack, Karenna was scheduled to receive her lifesaving transplant from a donor in Nashville, however, that became a challenge.
"They were trying to get them to get my liver to me, but all the planes were grounded," Kareena told Nashville's News 2.
Immediately doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and case managers at Tennessee Donor Services were determined to get the transplant to the infant in time.
"They really fought to get this to Kareena because they were so angry that this had happened in New York and they didn't want another life to be claimed," Kareena's mother Kirin said.
