Michigan residents registering as organ donors is on a steady rise.
In August, a record 44,101 people signed up as organ donors, said Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson in a statement.
That is a 40-percent increase from August 2010. Michigan’s donor registry has 2.3 million people.
“With every yes, we are improving the odds for those whose lives depend on receiving a transplant,” Johnson said.
The Secretary of State is working with Gift of Life Michigan and the Michigan Eye-Bank to encourage Michiganders to register.
August was the fourth consecutive months sign-ups have increased. May, June and July were up 20, 25 and 28 percent over the same months in 2010.
“This demonstrates the commitment the people in our state have to saving and improving lives,” said Richard Pietroski, Gift of Life Michigan chief executive officer.
Anyone interested in signing up can visit the registry website. Those registered receive a heart sticker for their driver’s license.
