Miller boxing again on a mission

Times Union | Pete Iorizzo
After donating liver, he aims to aid organ donors

While he's running three miles and then lifting weights and then hitting the heavy bag and then sparring, Shannon Miller doesn't think about how just eight months ago he donated half his liver to an ailing uncle.

He thinks about fighting again.

Maybe soon.

"I did a lot of research into whether there's ever been a fighter who has donated his liver and then come back," the professional heavyweight from Troy said.

Long story short: "I couldn't find one," he said. "A big part of me wants to be first."

Now before you declare Miller certifiably insane, consider: The 37-year-old said he feels better than ever. He takes no medication as a result of his surgery and won't even need to see a doctor again until 2012. He faces no physical restrictions, no dietary restrictions and, obviously, no mental restrictions.
