The Nicholas effect in Canada

The Tandem | by Simona Giacobbi

The inspiring story of an American boy slain in Italy aids Torch of Life Donation Campaign.

The story of Nicholas is a story about how a child — just a child — was able to change 17 years ago the mindset of an entire nation: Italy. The Nicholas effect will now help light George Marcello’s Torch of Life in the heart of Toronto.

This will take place next week when the father of the child fatally wounded during a 1994 robbery attempt in Calabria will raise the Torch of Life, the symbol of Step by Step’s organ donation awareness-raising campaign.

“The Nicholas effect will now continue in Toronto as well,” said organization founder Marcello, who brings Reginald Green to Toronto to meet the Italian community, thanks also to the partnership with the National Congress of Italian-Canadians Toronto District presided by Michael Tibollo.

The visit was Sunday on Bathurst Street and continued to College Street. On Monday, Green was at the Walk of Fame ceremonies, and on Tuesday he raised the Torch in front of the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, then at the Toronto General Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children.
