Landon Powell remembers the moment he understood the words “organ donor.” The Oakland A’s baseball player was training during the off season and passed out. Doctors said he had an autoimmune disease that would mean, among other things, that one day he would need a liver transplant.
“I started looking into organ donation,” says Powell, who attended the University of South Carolina and lives with his wife and 2-year-old son in Greenville in the off season. “That opened my eyes to how big an issue it is and how many people are waiting for transplants out there right now.”
He wanted to do something. So Powell, along with Donate Life South Carolina, is spreading the word about organ and tissue donation with Donors on the Diamond Sunday at Fluor Field. The second annual event mixes food, music, a silent auction and sports to raise money for the local organ donation organization and to raise awareness about the importance of organ donors and how to become one.
