For Cathy Mattingly, it was the height of grief. For Elzierine Powell, it was a tragedy that led to her salvation.
In December 2009, Mattingly’s daughter Carissa Foushee died after a head-on collision on an icy Kentucky 144 near Payneville. Foushee’s two young children also died.
Long before the accident, Foushee had made certain that her family knew that she’d want her organs donated, Mattingly said.
“She said, ‘Why do you want something you don’t need anymore?’” Mattingly said.
Donating Foushee’s organs was an easy decision, Mattingly said. She was more certain than ever Saturday morning when she finally met Powell, the Elizabethtown woman who received her daughter’s heart.
