'Superheroes' of All Ages Run "Not Your Average Joe 10K"

San Tan Valley Today | Bridgette M. Crosby

Encanterra Golf Resort in San Tan Valley was alive with “Superheroes” of all sorts during the “Not Your Average Joe” 10K charity run on Sat. Oct. 1, 2011.

San Tan Valley was once again the host city of this important fundraiser for the Joe Gibson Memorial Foundation. This is the second year for the event.

Joe Gibson was an ER Physician with Emergency Professional Services who lived life to the fullest and was a strong supporter of organ donations. As an ER doctor for two Banner hospitals in the Valley, Joe saw firsthand how organ donation could save lives.

While training for a race in December 2009, Joe was hit by a car and died of severe brain injuries. Because of his belief and support of organ donation, he saved the lives of four other people.

One of those people is Al Robinson, the recipient of Joe’s heart. Robinson had cardiomyopathy - a disease of the heart muscle that would have killed him. On Jan. 1, 2010 the Gibson family gave him a second chance at life.
