At first glance, they could be a grandmother and grandson. But Virginia Rose and Kenneth Melrose have never met until today.
Virginia is alive because of Kenneth's kidney. "I've been waiting four years," she said.
Virginia spent years on dialysis after hypertension and diabetes led to kidney disease. No one she knew could donate for her, so she waited for her day to top the transplant list.
"I guess it was just meant to be, that I'd wait that long," she said.
Virginia and Kenneth both came to UT Medical Center on Independence Day for surgery the next morning. But they were in separate sides of the hospital and never saw each other.
