Azerbaijan bans children’s organ and tissue donation and transplantation

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. By Decision #187 from 17 November the Azerbaijani Cabinet Ministers approved the normative acts regulating application of the Law on Transplantation of Human Organs and/or Tissues.

The Decision endorses the rules and criteria of transplantation of human organs and/or tissues, the rules of selection, preparation (conservation) and storage of organs and tissues for transplantation, the rules of performing transplant surgeries.

A decision whether to transplant is made by the council of physicians. Selection of donors and recipients is carried out only with their written consent. Consent for recipients under the age of 18 years is given by their legal representatives.

In case of danger to life of the recipient and impossibility to obtain the consent of his representatives, the transplantation is carried out without such permission. It can be done only in specialized clinics.

At that, donation by persons under age of 18 years is prohibited and it is required to conclude an agreement on sale of organs/tissues and transplantation.

In Azerbaijan transplantation can be performed only in the Republican Urological Hospital named after M. Javadzadeh, the Central Customs Hospital, the Research Center of Ophthalmology named after Zarifa Aliyeva, and the Central Oilmen’s Hospital.
