Topeka Capital-Journal | Phil Anderson
By the time he was an eighth-grader at Jardine Middle School in 2000, Antonio “Tony” Hunt could dunk a basketball.
He even did it during a game.
“It was at Chase Middle School,” his mother, Betty, said proudly, nearly 12 years after the memorable play.
Tony was known as “The Candy Man.” Always loved candy. Especially gummy worms.
Lord only knows what Tony Hunt could have done with his basketball skills had his life not ended at age 13 the night of March 24, 2000, when he was accidentally shot by a friend.
Betty said it was during spring break. She and other family members were downstairs in their home at 1904 S. Kansas Ave., where they lived at the time.
Betty said Tony knew guns were a no-no: off-limits, never to be touched.
Yet somehow, a gun got into the kids’ hands. A shot went off, and Tony was hit with a bullet in the head.
