Garet Schmehl received his driver license when he was 16, as many teens do. When it came to the question about being an organ donor, the St. Marys teen had a strong opinion and a heart-to-heart discussion with his parents.
“We discussed it when he was 16,” said his father, Tony Schmehl. “I had to sign for it for his driver's license. Renee wasn't real thrilled about it at the time.”
Renee Schmehl didn't need sold on the merits of donating her organs to strangers if something happened to her. Garet's mother already signed up for the program.
“I just didn't think you should be worrying about your children going before you, I guess,” she said.
