Organ Donation Fits Faith - Canada

St Catherine's Standard, Niagara Region | Erica Bajer

Saving a life in death is a blessing for the soul, not a curse.

It's a truth Dr. Budhendra Doobay, a St. Catharines vascular surgeon, said he's spent years trying to spread to people of the Hindu faith.

"If you give an organ, it does not affect your soul. The soul is pure and the soul is totally separate from the body," he said. "By giving your organ, you receive so much more blessings."

Many people of the Indo-Asian culture believe if they donate an organ, they will be missing it in their next life, he explained.

"That's a fear," he said. "My job is to tell people this is not so."

Doobay, who discusses Hinduism on Sundays at 6 a.m. on CTS television, said the taboo surrounding organ donation needs to be lifted. Giving is truer to Hindu beliefs.
