November 1 has been designated as Hellenic Organ Donor Day.
During recent years, organ donation rates have increased significantly in Greece, contends the Hellenic National Transplant Organization (HNTO), according to which, the awareness-raising campaign over organ donation has finally born fruits. The figures are impressive: a organ donor can save up to eight lives! In the past two months alone, 5,000 new volunteers signed up to donate organs and tissues in Greece, while in 2010, the total number of people registered did not go above 2,000.
Nowadays, there are 5.8 donors per million of inhabitants, while every two to three days one donor becomes available for organ transplantation. This is a relatively low rate worldwide linked to the recently abandoned ‘opt-in’ system, according to which, donation is made possible only under consent.
