When I told my mother that if anything ever happened to me that caused my untimely passing, I want to be an organ donor, she got an uncomfortable look and squirmed a bit. Indeed, it can seem a tough subject, and she had questions about the process that I couldn’t answer – fortunately, there’s a Frequently Asked Questions section of the website for UNYTS – Upstate New York Transplant Services.
Some folks have reasons to not be organ/tissue donors – reasons they believe in deeply, and to each their own. For those who are open to it, it might not be enough to just have it noted on one’s driver’s license. The most important step in becoming a donor is to discuss your wishes with your immediate family members. They will be asked at the time of your death to give permission for your donation. After discussing your wishes with your family, fill out a donor card, and enroll in the New York State Donate Life Registry.
