The Spanish National Transplant Organisation (Spanish acronym: ONT) is committed to the spread of donation of organs after cardiac death throughout Spain, rather than it being contained to only the largest cities as is the case right now.
The goal set by the Spanish National Transplant Organisation is to increase this type of donation to a level at which donors after cardiac death account for 20% of the total. For that to happen, hospitals in medium-sized cities will need to become involved.
The acting Secretary-General for Health, Alfonso Jiménez Palacios, explained this on Wednesday morning at the opening session of the 'National Consensus Conference on Organ Donation after Cardiac Death', organised by the Spanish National Transplant Organisation in collaboration with the Mutua Madrileña Foundation. Alfonso Jiménez Palacios was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, Lorenzo Cooklin, the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, Enrique Moreno, and the Director of the Spanish National Transplant Organisation, Rafael Matesanz.
In his speech, the Secretary-General for Health highlighted the work of the Spanish National Transplant Organisation in maintaining and guaranteeing Spain's global leadership in the field of organ donation and transplantation by seeking formulas that seek to increase donations. By way of example, he pointed to the work the organisation has been doing for the last year on the spread of donation after cardiac death throughout Spain. "This type of organ donation represents the clearest way to increase donations in our country over the next two years", said Alfonso Jiménez Palacios.
