A normal kidney, said Jackie Roberts, 61, of Crest Hill, weighs 5 ounces, but polycystic kidney disease caused Roberts’ kidneys to enlarge to five pounds.
“My doctor told me I didn’t set any records. They’ve taken out larger ones,” said Roberts, who has undergone two kidney transplants. “I have a picture of my kidney. It looks nasty.”
According to Mayo Clinic, polycystic kidney disease is a disorder that causes cysts to form in the kidneys and possibly in other organs, such as the liver. Complications can include hypertension and kidney failure.
PKD killed Roberts’ mother at 36, and Roberts’ grandmother. Both Roberts’ children have the disease, as does Roberts’ sister Kathy Strle, 51, also of Crest Hill.
