Women of the World: Organ Transplants

Being a Broad - for foreign women in Japan

BY DANIELLE TATE-STRATTON

Twenty-four year-old Kibby Evans from British Columbia, Canada is preparing to undertake a 9,000 kilometre bike ride–across the width of Canada–to raise funds and awareness for transplant research. She will be undertaking the trip with friend Daman Milsom and together the pair are aiming to raise $50,000 for transplant research and encourage 10,000 Canadians to become organ donors.

The trip, which will start in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and end in Victoria, British Columbia, is expected to take four months and will be completed between May and August, 2012. In the meantime, the pair are preparing for the trip by doing lots of training and raising money for research and raising awareness through their website,http://trekking4transplants.ca.

Of the difficult trip, Kibby says they will be drawing inspiration from friends, family, and fellow Canadians who have been affected by organ failure. In Canada in 2010, 2,153 patients received organ transplants, but over 4,000 remained on the list waiting for life-saving surgery, and nearly 250 unfortunately passed away while waiting for a transplant. Kibby and Damon are hoping to raise the number of transplant recipients through their journey. To help them out or simply keep up to date on their journey, visit their website or ‘like’ them on Facebook.
