Accolades: Young artists shine in card-design contest for organ donation

Tracy Press

Six Advanced Placement art students from West High School have been successful in a holiday card art contest sponsored by the California Transplant Donor Network, including the third-place winner, Amy Ly, a 17-year-old senior.

Crystal Kamada, a 17-year-old senior, received an honorable mention, and studio art classmates Leilani Gomez, Sanam Azizi, Saleina Noriesta and Kendell Cotta were also finalists. Azizi’s entry was selected as “Facebook Fave.”

The competition’s goal was to educate young people and their families about the importance of organ and tissue donation, while promoting artwork created by students. Each entry had to clearly promote organ and tissue donation and be entirely the original work of the submitting artist. More than 80 students entered work in a variety of media.

On Nov. 17, three California Transplant Donor Network representatives visited West High to distribute the students’ prizes. Ly won an iPod Nano, and Kamada and Azizi received gift cards.
