FLAT ROCK — Joyce Roush thought she’d served her purpose after becoming the first person in the U.S. to donate a kidney to a stranger.
Her action in 1999 drew national attention, and for a couple of years after, she told and re-told the story.
But after moving to Flat Rock from Indiana about eight years ago, Roush decided the story was one to be kept in the past. She joined Park Ridge Health and continued her career as a nurse.
Still, people remembered. When the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce gave Roush its Athena Award for her life’s work in health care in May, her legacy returned to the spotlight. In November, Roush gave her first public talk on the subject in 10 years.
