Donor's family ‘celebrate life' with holiday meeting

Daily Comet | Nikki Buskey

Just a week before Christmas, the Duplantis family of Houma suddenly found itself with three new branches.

As they gathered for their annual Christmas family celebration Dec. 18, Marion Duplantis had planned a surprise.

Derel Duplantis, 45, Marion's son and a father of three, had died more than six months earlier of a brain aneurysm. Derel's kidneys, heart and liver were donated before his death.

After contacting the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, the recipients, Dave Marcotte of Myrtle Grove, Tyrone Cooper of Luling, and Debra Valure of Bourg, arranged to meet the family of the man who gave them all such important gifts.

“It's hard to put into words what a celebration of life it was,” Marion Duplantis said. “Our son, whom we love so much, gave us a gift again — the gift of seeing other lives changed because of his unselfish act of love.”
