WOOSTER -- With Wooster, Orrville, Northwestern and Smithville all coming off 15-win campaigns and entering this season with high expectations, this weekend's Hoops 4 Healing Girls Basketball Classic will be an opportunity for all four area squads to get off to a fast start.
Over the years, though, this hardwood classic has become an opportunity for teams and the surrounding community to build much more than momentum at the start of the season.
The Hoops 4 Healing Classic started 13 years ago, featuring boys games only. In 2008, the event expanded to include girls games and has grown every year since, evolving into an area showcase for girls basketball.
This year's event will be again be played at Wooster High School and features three games, including four teams from Wayne County. Northwestern takes on Orrville in the opener Saturday at 1 p.m., Smithville faces off against Buckeye at 3 and Wooster plays Uniontown Lake in the finale at 5.
