Hispanic Ohio | Marcus Atkinson
From now until Dec. 30, the Ohio Hispanic Coalition partnering with LifelineofOhio and the Columbus Crew are accepting Christmas gifts and monetary donations for their 10th annual Hispanic toy drive.
According to the U.S. Census, the Hispanic population is Columbus is slightly over 16 percent of the city’s total population, and continues to grow. In addition, city hall has recently declared Columbus a “sanctuary city” creating an environment where undocumented persons can feel law enforcement will not pursue them.
The growing population has formed a need to help families during arguably the holiest of Christian holidays.
“Toys for Tots were requesting social security numbers for kids to get a toy,” said Jose Vicente, organizer for the Ohio Hispanic Coalition. “There started being families that had kids that were born out of the United States so Toys for Tots had a challenge”
