Rose Parade float to feature Taiwanese organ donor

Taiwan News

Los Angeles, Dec. 17 (CNA) A portrait of a young Taiwanese man whose organs were donated when he died will be a part of the Rose Parade's "Donate Life Float" in Pasadena, California on January 2 next year.

Hsiao Chih-chien died six years ago at the age of 18 in a traffic accident. His family gave permission for all of his vital organs and his corneas to be donated to six recipients.

Hsiao's portrait will be among 70 others from around the world that will be featured on the float. The concept of the float is to honor donations that helped save lives.

Hsiao was a gifted young man who spoke fluent English and loved cooking with his mother. He told his mother he would accompany her to France and help her with the language barrier while she fulfilled her lifetime dream of studying at Le Cordon Bleu of Culinary Art. However, he did not live long enough to keep that promise. He had a scooter accident in which he fell two meters down a road embankment and was later declared brain dead by doctors. Five days after the accident, Hsiao's family agreed to donate his organs. Hsiao's mother Hsu Shen-hui, his twin sister Hsiao Yu-chieh and other family members will travel to Pasadena to join the parade to honor the life of the young man. (By Wu Hsieh-chang and Ann Chen)
