On December 20 in an operating room at Jewish Hospital, a perfectly healthy kidney was removed from a patient for a special delivery.
"I've heard of people doing that before, but you know, I just didn't expect that," James Baines said.
Baines is the recipient of the special gift. He's been on the kidney transplant list since January because of the genetic Polycystic Kidney Disease. Candy Campbell initially tested to be a donor when a co-worker and friend needed a kidney, but she wasn't a match.
"I get teary eyed every time I say this, but once I started this process, I had this overwhelming sense of peace come over me, so I knew it was something God wanted me to do" Campbell said.
Campbell decided Christmas would be the perfect time to fulfill a wish that can't really be delivered on a sleigh. She was convinced, for her at least, this is a fit wrapped with love and compassion and spirit that signify the season.
