A London transplant surgeon has given his mother the gift of life by donating one of his own kidneys.
Asim Syed, 32, who has performed more than 100 procedures at Hammersmith Hospital, went under the knife himself in surgery carried out uniquely by his colleagues.
In doing so, he not only saved the life of his mother but, because the surgery was part of a donor chain, helped two other seriously ill patients waiting for a kidney transplant.
Hours after the surgery, Dr Syed was recovering in bed next to his mother and alongside two patients he had recently operated on. Dilshad Syed, 64, said: "When I came round from my operation Asim was in the next bed and the first thing he said was 'Mum, now all your worries are over'."
Mrs Syed had been on dialysis for five years when she started to develop major complications and was told she may have only months to live.
Her son brought her from her home in Doncaster and cared for her at his hospital, before offering her his own organ.
