Kelley (Giesler) Drastata suffered from a massive heart attack and collapsed lung.
She endured three heart procedures: coronary artery bypass, left ventricular assist device and a heart transplant. "I've been through heck and back," she said. "But I'm still here."
The 38-year-old Edna resident received a new heart on March 7, started training for a half-marathon in June, and crossed the finish line in November.
Family and other transplant survivors rallied around Drastata during the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon on Nov. 13. She walked 13.1 miles in 3 hours, 50 minutes, and 17 seconds. She placed 18,723 of 30,000 participants.
