In an unprecedented show of inspiration, yesterday’s Float Judging included several utterly memorable moments. The float was declared complete after 1pm as the floragraph of Christina-Taylor Green was placed at 12noon on the center clock by her father John and brother Dallas, with mother Roxanna looking on from below.
Approximately two hours before judging, as the sound system and animation were being tested, Donor Alliance float rider Linda Henning invited other floragraph family members to link hands in a semicircle around the float, singing our official song “100 Years” in unison. Phoenix Decorating Co. President Chris Lofthouse, deeply moved by the spontaneous gesture, asked for a reprise during the official judging. This highly unusual and very special request was fulfilled by approximately 60 floragraph family members who volunteered among the 400 people present.
Upon arrival at our float, the judges were invited to step into our circle to evaluate the float and meet our riders. The combination of our “floragraph family circle,” extraordinary design and craftsmanship, and float riders – who the judges met one by one – deeply moved the judges, who added ano additional five minutes to their judging time, circled the float three times, and offered a round of applause to all of our attendees on their last pass. It was quite simply extraordinary, and in all likelihood unprecedented in the Rose Parade’s 123-year history.
