Donor Alliance Reports Growing Organ and Tissue Donation Rates in Colorado and Wyoming in 2011

Sacramento Bee | PRNewswire

Increased driver's license office registration and 12 percent increase in organs transplanted lead to fewer deaths on the waiting list.

DENVER, Jan. 18, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Donor Alliance, the federally-designated, non-profit organ procurement organization and American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) accredited tissue bank serving Colorado and Wyoming, saw another banner year in 2011, with a record number of organ donors enabling 52 more people to receive lifesaving transplants than in 2010. Additionally, the organization worked with 966 tissue donors and their families to recover lifesaving and healing tissue, providing bone and skin grafts that will impact thousands of more lives.

Donor Alliance facilitated organ recoveries from 134 donors in 2011 and saw an increase in the number of organs transplanted for the fourth consecutive year. In 2011 this translated to 446 people in Colorado and throughout the country being removed from the transplant waiting list. This is a 12 percent increase in organ transplants over 2010 and 30 percent increase since 2007.
