Jariah Henderson was pronounced dead Monday morning at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago, two days after she was playing with other children -- within reach of a .22-caliber handgun -- in a relative's Indiana home, the Northwest Indiana Times reports.
"At this time police do not know how the child was shot," police told ABC Chicago over the weekend.
WGN-TV reports that physicians were able to harvest the child's organs by keeping her on a respirator, and that the donation could help seven children in need of life-saving surgeries.
No criminal charges have been filed in the shooting, which remains under investigation.
“It appears right now to be an accidental shooting," Cpl. Gabrielle King, public information officer with the Gary Police Department, told CBS Chicago. "There may be charges forthcoming. You can’t just leave guns lying around."
