Greensburg — Alice Bokelman considers herself grateful for every breath she takes.
The recipient of a double lung transplant in June 2011, Alice is as close to her "old self" as she's been for several years. The 59-year-old enjoys playing with her four grandchildren and recently was able to travel out and Christmas shop for the first time in several years. For Alice Bokelman, wife of Decatur County Special Olympics Director John Bokelman, life really is about "the little things."
The Decatur County resident said she takes nothing for granted after her surgery and prefers to live her life "one day at a time, step-by-step."
A few short months ago, little of this might have seemed possible.
Alice was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis June 13, 2011 suffering from bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Having suffered from all three illnesses since 1999, Alice had at last been placed on a donor waiting list to receive a double lung transplant. Prior to her admission to Methodist, Alice had been on a waiting list restricted to donors in the state of Indiana since December 2010. The severity of her condition necessitated placing Alice on a national waiting list the following June.
