ON THE MARCH!
Donate Life Rose Parade Float Update
January 2, 2012
* * * HAPPY NEW YEAR! “…ONE MORE DAY” HAS ARRIVED! * * *
FLOAT JUDGING ENTERS NEW FRONTIER
In an unprecedented show of inspiration, yesterday’s Float Judging included several utterly memorable moments. The float was declared complete after 1pm as the floragraph of Christina-Taylor Green was placed at 12noon on the center clock by her father John and brother Dallas, with mother Roxanna looking on from below. Approximately two hours before judging, as the sound system and animation were being tested, Donor Alliance float rider Linda Henning invited other floragraph family members to link hands in a semicircle around the float, singing our official song “100 Years” in unison. Phoenix Decorating Co. President Chris Lofthouse, deeply moved by the spontaneous gesture, asked for a reprise during the official judging. This highly unusual and very special request was fulfilled by approximately 60 floragraph family members who volunteered among the 400 people present. Upon arrival at our float, the judges were invited to step into our circle to evaluate the float and meet our riders. The combination of our “floragraph family circle,” extraordinary design and craftsmanship, and float riders – who the judges met one by one – deeply moved the judges, who added ano additional five minutes to their judging time, circled the float three times, and offered a round of applause to all of our attendees on their last pass. It was quite simply extraordinary, and in all likelihood unprecedented in the Rose Parade’s 123-year history.
IT WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY
Of the float’s many striking elements – 28 float riders, 33-foot clock tower, and floragraphs occupying the hour positions on six giant floral clocks – one feature that has repeatedly inspired an audible gasp among passersby. The float’s Dedication Garden, the front-facing floral clock, will have hour and minute hands rotating as the float travels down Colorado Blvd. However, in recognition of the many memorial dedications in the garden, the clock’s hands will move backwards in time. Watch for it on television and be moved as we are.
MEET ALEXIS SLOAN, OUR 29TH FLOAT RIDER
This week in Pasadena we were deeply saddened to announce the death earlier this month of Ashley Anne Quinter, who had been announced as a 2012 Float Rider in September. Ashley’s death as a result of respiratory failure came a little more than two years after receiving the lungs of 2012 Floragraph Honoree Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez in a transplant necessitated by a long battle against cystic fibrosis. As reported by the Boston Herald, “the operation gave her the ability to breathe again without obstruction and enabled her last June 25 to walk down the aisle and exchange vows with Jesse Quinter.” She was a substitute elementary teacher, did volunteer work for Gift of Life Donor Program and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and was a co-founder of the Lucky Lungs Foundation.
Ashley’s opportunity to participate as a 2012 Donate Life Float Rider was accepted with grace by Alexis Sloan of Philadelphia, the recipient of Paco’s heart. As Alexis stated at our Float Rider Dinner on Dec. 29, Ashley will be riding with her as she sits alongside Paco’s brother Alex Rodriguez within eyeshot of Paco’s floragraph in the 2012 Rose Parade later this morning. Meet Alexis and learn about the “one more day,” and then some, that Paco’s donation and her transplant made possible:
VIEWING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TODAY’S BROADCAST
The 2012 Rose Parade is being broadcast today starting at 11am ET/8am PT by eight TV networks, including ABC, NBC, HGTV and Hallmark Channel. The event is also covered regionally by RFD-TV in the Midwest, Univision-34 Los Angeles, and KTLA-5 Los Angeles, which is known for their commercial-free telecast, repeat airings throughout the day, and broadcast team Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards.
Viewed will be interested in viewing the one-hour pre-show on HGTV, which will feature a segment on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float and a focus on liver recipientVicky Nguyen, who serves as one of our “red jacket” float decorating supervisors.
As for the Rose Parade telecast, we recommend viewing the ABC telecast. Prior to the appearance of Donate Life’s “…One More Day” approximately 45 minutes into the telecast, the network will air a 90-second segment featuring the family of New England Organ Bank floragraph honoree Katie Enos and the floragraph finishing event held in her hometown. Also highlighted is the family meeting Sherri and Sarah Lamon, the mother/daughter floragraph volunteers who decorated Katie’s portrait with such care.
After the ABC telecast, viewers in the greater Los Angeles can watch repeat airings of KTLA’s award-winning parade coverage throughout the day.
DEDICATION GARDEN IS COMPLETE
This year’s Donate Life Dedication Garden features 3,000 dedicated roses from 44 states, Australia, Austria and Canada. Please see the attached press release, and read all of our posted dedications here:
