Jerlene Gilmore and her son, Michael Gilmore, talked about organ donation before he got his driver’s license. He told his mother he wanted to be an organ donor because he wanted to help people.
In April 2010, police found Michael Gilmore fatally shot in his apartment in Jonesboro, Ark., where he was attending Arkansas State University and majoring in physical education after having graduated with honors from Central High School in West Helena. His killer has not been caught.
Today, his mother and family still feel his loss deeply. They are, however, heartened by his decision to donate his organs, a decision which has been a lifesaver for others. And when the Donate Life Rose Parade Float maneuvered along the streets of Pasadena, Calif., during the Rose Bowl Parade on Jan. 2, Jerlene Gilmore was there, along with her son, Demarcus, and her daughter, Kaneisha.
