Organ donor registrations soar after Justin Bieber, Barenaked Ladies, Bif Naked tweets
OTTAWA — A Barrhaven woman’s plan to boost the number of organ donors in Ontario by enlisting superstar Justin Bieber’s Twitter followers is working.
The Trillium Gift of Life Network had 565 people register on its beadonor.ca website on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, in the days after Hélène’s Campbell made her plea for donors.
It would normally take the organization three weeks to get that many people to register, said Trillium spokeswoman Leona Hollingsworth. The site logged more than 2,400 visits over the weekend, she said.
Campbell, 20, has moved to Toronto as she waits for word of a lung transplant. She began the Twitter campaign with some friends to raise awareness of the need for organ donors and tweeted Bieber for help.
The teenaged Canadian crooner responded on Saturday, retweeting Campbell’s message to his 16 million followers.
