CHEYENNE -- Colorado and Wyoming have seen a 12 percent rise in organs transplanted in 2011 over the previous year, a procurement group reports.
The two states already have some of the highest organ donor participation rates, the Donor Alliance reports. Wyoming’s rate is 59 percent, and Colorado’s is 67 percent, both well above the national average of about 40 percent.
While Wyoming’s rate has held steady for the last few years, there were more than 5,000 new organ donation registrations in 2011.
“We believe the citizens of Wyoming and Colorado have a strong commitment to their community, which is represented in these numbers,” said Donor Alliance CEO Sue Dunn. “We are really pleased, but there is still some work to be done in getting people registered and aware of the program.”
