Peoria ranks 'as one of top organ donation centers in state'

Peoria Journal Star | Matt Beudel

Last year, in Peoria County 67 miracles resulted from 18 tragedies.

The miracles were donated organs which saved lives.

Though 2011 ended with the lowest number of organ donors in Peoria County in the last five years, the figure still represents a significant milestone: more than 100 people since 2007 have become donors locally.

"When it comes to Peoria, but especially when it comes to OSF Saint Francis (Medical Center), they are one of the top organ donation centers in the state," said Dave Bosch from the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network.

The 18 donors in Peoria County in 2011 brought to 116 the total number of donors over the last half decade. Nearly 400 organs were recovered from those donors to be used in life saving transplant surgeries throughout Illinois and beyond.

While Gift of Hope acknowledged that a higher than usual number of donors could be expected out of

Peoria County because St. Francis hospital is a level-one trauma center and more likely than other facilities to receive potential candidates for donation, the elevated local numbers also are the result of a mix of private and public officials dedicated to the process.
