Dr. Joann Schaefer Runs Half Marathons Following Liver Transplant Surgery
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska's chief medical officer is proving that a major health setback doesn't have to slow you down. Dr. Joann Schaefer has run several half marathons since having a liver transplant.
Since she is the top doctor at the state's Department of Health and Human Services, Schaefer believes she should be a role model.
"I feel I need to set an example," she said. "I don't ask anybody to not do anything I am not willing to do myself."
Running does that for Schaefer, but it's been a rough road. Three years ago, she faced her own health crisis.
