Tom Brady connects with organ donor matchup site

Boston Business Journal | Julie M. Donnelly

Superbowl-bound New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is taking some time out from practice to urge people to sign up to be an organ donor on Matchingdonors.com.

Brady has a personal stake in raising awareness about organ donation - he’s hoping Canton, Mass-based Matchingdonors.com will be able to identify a donor for one of his mentors, Tom Martinez.

Martinez, 68, a quarterback coach in California, has worked with Brady since his youth, and is in need of a kidney transplant. So far, a match has not been found.

“Toms a great guy and has given us great visibility,” Paul Dooley, CEO of MatchingDonors.com, said in a statement. Dooley said nineteen people die every day in the United States waiting for a kidney transplant, most waiting 7 to 9 years. He said the average patient gets their transplant through MatchingDonors.com within six months of signing up on the website.
