Whiz Kid: Sam Smith

School/Grade: Trabuco Hills High School, 10th Grade

Whiz Kid Achievement: For his Eagle Scout Project, Sam organized the first of what figures to be an annual event, the Run for Ruby, which honored Ruby Jane Taylor, an infant who captured the heart of the community during her battle with a rare liver disease.

Key to Awesomeness: Sam Smith, a sophomore at Trabuco Hills High School and longtime Boy Scout, wanted to do something meaningful for his Eagle Scout Project. This project requires coming up with a sustainable plan, developing it and giving leadership to others after selecting a service project. It often requires hundreds of hours of volunteer time and development. Sam chose to organize the first Run For Ruby, a fundraiser in honor of little Ruby Jane Taylor, an infant who passed away at just seven months old after battling a rare liver disease. Ruby died while awaiting a liver transplant.

Sam had to present his project to the Scout council. When asked about the purpose of his project, his mother Jackie said he stated that he wanted to raise awareness for organ donation and also help the family heal. The Smith family is friends with the Taylors, so the cause was especially close to their hearts.
