Resident receives heart transplant on day of LifeGift appearance

Kingwood Observer | Your Kingwood News, Jennifer Summer

It was a miracle for Michael Leon when he received the call that a second heart was available.

Even more to celebrate, Michael received his heart the same day as his father’s birthday and the day he was set to speak to the Humble Independent School District Council of PTAs and fellow students Jan. 31 about his condition and the importance of becoming an organ donor.

“We are speechless. We are mourning for the family who had to lose a loved one in order for Leon to receive his heart but excited because this is our second chance,” Dixie Montoya, Michael’s mother, said the day of the transplant.

Due to an infection when he was an infant, Michael received a much needed heart transplant when he was 2 years old. This allowed him to become involved in numerous activities. Last year, he spoke at the same event and shared his story about why he needed another heart, for which he was put on the donor list in 2010.
