CLEARFIELD - One year ago, physicians at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore told a local funeral director that his damaged heart was quickly deteriorating, and he needed to prepare himself and his family for the possibility that he would not survive another month without a transplant. He had already been waiting seven months on the organ transplant list.
Ten days after the devastating news, William "Bill" Benamati of Curwensville was at work at Bennett & Houser Funeral Home when his wife, Julie, told him that a donor had been found. In the early hours of Feb. 21, 2011, he received a life-saving heart and liver transplant.
Just short of a year later, Benamati returned to his position as manager in Clearfield and at the Mohney-Yargar Funeral Chapel in DuBois.
