Mukwonago teenager’s quiet decision is a lasting gift
It was a hot afternoon in summer and they were sitting on the grass beside the goal post, taking a brief water break in the midst of a long soccer practice. Chris Persinger was 17; his sister Caitlyn, 13.
An incoming senior at Mukwonago High School, Chris had big plans. He had applied to colleges. He wanted to go to California to be a real estate agent. He had written a poem called "Choices," which ended:
Every choice
helps you see,
what kind of person
you want to be.
He'd made choices that spoke to the kind of person he was becoming, one in particular. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
On this day more than four years ago, sitting on the grass with his sister, he was not thinking of his own future. There would be time enough for that.
You could make varsity, he told Caitlyn.
