The Herald Journal | Jeff Hunter
Sitting on a couch in his living room, Spencer Felt looks like any other bored 6-year-old boy using his imagination to turn the gadget in his hands into an item of amusement.
While his mother, Nancy, is busy talking, Spencer repeatedly pushes the plunger on the large, syringe-like portion of the device, then fiddles with the end of one of the tubes until a small plastic piece falls off. Occasionally he looks tempted to put a portion of it in his mouth, but then he’ll suddenly be distracted by a gentle game of tug-of-war over the apparatus with his 3-year-old sister, Claire.
A creative mind could find all kinds of uses for the metal-and-plastic contraption currently found in the young boy’s hands.
It’s easy to forget that the original purpose of Spencer’s “toy” was to keep him alive.
