New heart for Oli shows what donor campaign can do - UK

News Leak UK
The household of a infant who had a heart transplant are urging much more people to sign up as organ donors.

By the time he was six months old, 1 of Oli Wood’s lungs had collapsed and he had suffered paralysis and two heart attacks.

His mother Ruth, a former Royston resident, learnt her only youngster had multiple heart defects requiring life-saving surgery when he was just hours old. He became a single of the youngest young children in the country to undergo a full heart transplant.

Oli underwent 4 main operations – including getting fitted with an artificial heart – as surgeons tried to correct two holes in his heart, a leaking valve, and an abnormal heartbeat that can lead to heart failure.

“It was hellish,” mentioned Ruth, a former Meridian School pupil. “We didn’t assume he was going to make it. It was one particular thing immediately after another.”
