For the past two years, Don Leake's heart has been pumped by a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) that he wore in a sling. Thanks to an organ donor and a heart transplant, he has a real heart pumping in his chest.
Leake said in reference to hearing about his heart match, "The call came that there was a heart that would match ours, match mine."
It wasn't a mistake when Leake said 'match ours.' His sister-in-law, Wanda Baker, added, "It was one great time of our life, of his life, the time has come."
On February 18, 2012, Don Leake was told by University of Virginia Medical Center that doctors were ready to perform heart transplant surgery.
