CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- A Tennessee baby boy received a life-saving heart transplant Friday. He's been kept alive by machines for a record-breaking 50 days waiting for a donor.
Andrew Hagewood survived several hours of surgery to give him a new heart Friday. He's been one of thousands of children on a waiting list as he fought for his life and waited for a match many never receive.
A Youtube video shows Andrew listening to his little sister singing to him over the phone in Vanderbilt waiting for a new heart. His family posted the video hoping to spread the word that chances are few for infant organ donation.
"Andrew's life depended on it," cousin Jennifer Bryars said.
Bryars says he broke records for staying alive on an ECMO machine waiting for a match.
"Andrew was a specific case because he has "O negative" blood and that's very rare, so that was even harder to find," Bryars said.
But, then they got a call overnight.
"We just waited and prayed and last night we got a donor and we're so thrilled," Bryars said.
Shelia Jetton lived the same scene last year. Her baby, Elizabeth, had five offered lung transplants fall through because they didn't meet the strict guidelines to donate to a baby.
