WSET ABC 13, Lynchburg VA
Lynchburg, VA- April is National Donate Life month. On average, every year 28,000 transplants are performed in the U.S., and about 700 in Virginia.
Friday in Lynchburg, Centra and LifeNet Health came together to honor organ donors.
We talked with both a recipient, and the father of a donor. Both of these men say they've been through some unbelievable things, all thanks to organ donation.
They call it a "gift." A gift that saved one man's life, and changed another's. And now they see it as their duty to spread the word about being an organ donor, and how many lives it could save.
Kevin Shroyer lost his 14-year-old daughter Corinne, on May 26th, 2002.
"She was a daddy's girl," said Shroyer.
Kevin and his wife made the decision to donate her organs.
"It was the best possible decision we could have made in those circumstances," said Shroyer.
Corinne donated her lungs to a man named Len from Georgia, who like Kevin, is an avid runner. And as fate would have it, Len and Kevin became running buddies.
"It's amazing that someone so like me is the recipient of my daughter's lungs," said Shroyer.
