Twenty years ago, doctors told Michael Kutcher and his family that the teen probably wouldn’t live more than two or three weeks without a heart transplant.
“Back in 1991, I was a vibrant 13-year-old child with nothing to do but cause havoc around my family with my twin brother (Ashton) by my side,” Kutcher said.
When his mother took him to the hospital with flu-like symptoms shortly after Thanksgiving, doctors discovered he had an enlarged heart.
“He looked and me and said, ‘You need a transplant.’” Kutcher said. “At age 13, I had no idea what that meant. My first question was how long am I going to be out of school ... I thought a new heart was something you could just pick off the shelf.”
