When it comes to dealing with the unpredictable, day after day, year after year, it’s human nature to crave the predictable. And when it comes to quelling anxiety because the unpredictable element is life threatening, it’s natural to crave something comforting.
For Deb Person of Marblehead — whose Type 1 diabetes had progressed so far that sometimes she could no longer be assured that she was thinking straight about her medical condition — that predictability and comfort became embodied in the voice of WGBH Radio’s classical music announcer Laura Carlo.
That’s why, when Person had astonishingly triumphed over her diabetes with a pancreas transplant, she was so excited to celebrate her recovery from the surgery and her new diabetes-free life, with a visit with her radio idol.
